Let’s face it; we are living in a time where God is confronting mankind with its depravity. The medium? Technological singularity. The more united we are with the world of instant information that is the internet, the more accessible man’s moral corruption is. It is being evidenced all around us. The old lines here in America e.g. Abortion and Homosexual rights, are gone; now the lines have been redrawn with much more aggressive, let alone progressive overtones. No longer is the debate about accepting, let’s say, the Homosexual lifestyle; the option now is to either celebrate it as the purest form of civil rights, love, equality, freedom to be celebrated, and ethical good; or if one does not assent, you are simply labeled as the purest form of evil and bigotry. But the collapse of Western civilization is much worse than that. The world is evolving, or rather devolving, very quickly into a culture of what we can only call Homosexual-Idolatry with an imperialistic zeal. The recent “coming out” of several professional sports athletes in recent news is just the latest example of the culture and media bowing down to the idol of false sexuality. It seems like everyday a new State, e.g. Texas, is either lifting the ban against Homosexual “marriage” or making such unions completely legal. The recent court decision in Arizona prohibiting businesses from right to refuse business based on sexual discrimination has just stripped the committed Christian in many contexts from adhering to his/her biblical convictions. Darker still is the diabolical “gay agenda” which will seemingly stop at nothing until heterosexuals feel themselves as the truly unnatural, oppressed, old fashion, and unpopular sexual orientation. Ground breaking iniquity is taking place just north of us too. Canada recently opened up a camp called “You are You” for “girls” where actually young boys can “come out” at the earliest ages and “explore” their true gender. While many in the Evangelical world are “tip toeing” around the issues for fear of the politically correct establishment and media; let me say unequivocally that this “Camp” should strike us as breathtaking evil. The camp functions as a virtual amusement park for cross dressing children complete with proxy cat walks, fashion shows, where boys as young as 3 years old can try on dresses, skirts and make up while they twirl around like little “girls” all to the applause of supportive on-looking parents. Make no mistake; this is the collapse of Western civilization with a smile as it continues to exchange the truth for a lie and the glory
of God for idolatry of every form (Rom. 1.18-23).
The call of the 21st century Christian is therefore a daunting one. What is the right response? How can we answer the apparent avalanche of out-of-control moral evil all around us? The question is relevant because Christians who are committed to Scripture and biblical principles are being more and more isolated as the ultimate source of barbaric bigotry. The world condemns anyone who would dare speak against such modernity, such social progress in the name of civil rights and human rights. I want to point out three things in response but first let me begin with a quick reminder of the prophetic words of the Lord Jesus:
John 7:7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.
Matthew 10:25 “It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household!
Every biblical example we find in Scripture where Christ and culture is mentioned we find three elements: preaching, persecution, and perseverance. As for the culture, the rise of sin, ethical erosion, and even persecution is a clear sign of God’s already-not-yet wrath being heaped upon humanity and the already-not-yet deliverance of God’s people (Phil. 1.28; cf. Gen. 6.5-7; Matt. 24; Lk. 12.49-53; Acts 4.19; Rom. 1.18ff). Our calling and confidence is Christ. In the face of such a fast changing world, we are called to preach the historical Christ (1 Cor. 2.2-5) not politics, psychology, or philosophy because these are not the things that make us different from the world and the spirit of the age. Above all what makes us different is our allegiance to Jesus of Nazareth (Acts 4.12; 26.9). Therefore, we are preaching the Christ who is not of this world and runs contrary to the flow of this world’s political and religious views. Ultimately our hope lies not in the kingdoms of this world but in a city yet to come whose builder and maker is God (Heb. 11.10, 13-16).
